Nissan Rogue Sport

Importing a used Nissan Rogue Sport from the USA

The Nissan Rogue Sport is a case study in how one car wears two identities. What Americans bought as the Rogue Sport is, underneath, the same J11-generation compact crossover Europeans know as the Qashqai — a right-sized, easy-driving family SUV that slots below the larger Rogue. Importing the US version appeals to buyers who want a familiar, practical crossover with American specification and equipment, or who simply prefer to source from the deep, competitively priced US used market. When you import a used Nissan Rogue Sport from the USA, USCar Trader works purely as your independent broker, sourcing and shipping the car you choose with no dealer margin on the vehicle.

Production years and key changes

The Rogue Sport launched in the United States for the 2017 model year as a rebadged second-generation Qashqai (J11), positioned as a smaller, more affordable companion to the mainstream Rogue. It ran through to 2022, when Nissan retired the nameplate in North America without a direct replacement as the brand consolidated its crossover line-up. Over that run it received a mid-cycle refresh with revised front-end styling, updated infotainment and an expanded suite of driver-assistance features. Because it is essentially the Qashqai, its engineering is well understood and parts availability in Europe is excellent — a genuine practical advantage for an imported vehicle.

What is under the hood

Every US Rogue Sport uses the 2.0-litre MR20DD four-cylinder petrol engine, producing around 141 hp, paired with Nissan's Xtronic CVT. Front-wheel drive is standard, with an on-demand all-wheel-drive system optional across the range. This is a modestly powered, efficiency-focused crossover rather than a performance vehicle — the emphasis is on smooth, undemanding progress and reasonable economy. The CVT is tuned for relaxed everyday driving, and the compact dimensions make the Rogue Sport genuinely easy to place on European roads, which is part of its charm as an import.

Trims and body styles

The Rogue Sport comes as a single five-door crossover body in a straightforward trim ladder: S, SV and the well-equipped SL. Higher trims add heated leather seats, a surround-view camera, Bose audio, and Nissan's ProPILOT Assist and Safety Shield 360 driver-aid packages on later cars. Because the US market bundled generous safety and convenience kit into affordable trims, even mid-spec examples tend to be well appointed. The SL is the one to seek if you want the full complement of comfort and assistance features.

What the US market offers

Rogue Sports sold in solid numbers to private and lease buyers, so the American used market offers plenty of clean, low-to-moderate mileage examples from the 2017–2022 run. Cars from southern and western states are typically rust-free and well preserved. As with any mainstream crossover, condition and service history matter more than the badge, and matching the trim and drivetrain (front- or all-wheel drive) you actually want is the key to a good import. We report mileage, specification and documented history on any car we source, without quoting European prices here.

Who this import is for

The Rogue Sport suits a buyer who wants a practical, economical, easy-to-live-with compact crossover and likes the idea of a US-specification Qashqai with American equipment. Its shared engineering with the European Qashqai means servicing and parts are simple here, removing one of the usual headaches of importing an unfamiliar model. It is a sensible, no-drama import for everyday use rather than an enthusiast's choice.

Reliability: trouble spots to check

The Rogue Sport is generally dependable, helped by the maturity of the Qashqai platform. The MR20DD engine is robust with regular maintenance. As with other recent Nissans, the most important area to check is the Xtronic CVT: the fluid must be changed on schedule and kept cool, and a neglected transmission can develop shudder or fail expensively, so a documented CVT service history is valuable. Beyond that, watch for the usual small-crossover items — suspension bushing and link wear, occasional infotainment or camera glitches, and interior trim rattles. Rust is mainly a concern on salt-belt cars. Buy on condition and service records and the Rogue Sport is a low-hassle vehicle.

US vs. Europe differences

The US Rogue Sport runs amber rear indicators, has no rear fog lamp, and uses MPH-primary instrumentation; infotainment and radio bands are set for North America. Trim naming and some equipment bundles differ from the European Qashqai, but the mechanicals are shared, which makes parts and servicing here easy. The individual-approval work is mostly lighting and instrumentation.

How the import works

1) Select the trim and drivetrain with us. 2) VIN and origin check to confirm build plant and specification. 3) Escrow payment released only against clear title. 4) Inland haulage to the US port and ocean freight to Europe. 5) Customs clearance on arrival. 6) Technical inspection and individual approval (TUEV / §21). 7) Registration. We manage the process end to end.

Import duty, VAT and fees

Remember: no origin proof, no 0% duty – and 19% German import VAT is due on every import.

Two charges apply and we keep them separate. The EU import duty can be 0% only where US origin is proven through the VIN and plant of manufacture, under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461, for directly transported goods, valid 1 July 2026 to 31 December 2029. Because the Rogue Sport is built outside the US and is listed here as neutral origin, the applicable duty rate depends on the actual build plant and is confirmed per VIN — we never promise duty-free. Separately and always, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) applies on the customs value. Both are passed through transparently, with no broker margin on the car.

From modifications to registration

Expect to add or convert a rear fog lamp, adapt rear lighting where required, ensure headlights meet European requirements, and confirm the speedometer reads correctly (odometer verification is part of the process). As a Qashqai-based vehicle, the Rogue Sport usually passes individual approval without structural changes.

Pre-buy inspection points

Match the VIN to the title and decode the build plant. Pull a full Carfax or AutoCheck for accident, title and odometer history. Insist on evidence of CVT fluid changes. Inspect underbody and arches for rust on salt-belt cars. Confirm the drivetrain (FWD or AWD) matches what you want. Verify the title is clean, not salvage or rebuilt. Check that cameras and driver-assist systems function.

What buyers ask most

Is the Rogue Sport the same as the Qashqai?

Yes. The US Rogue Sport is a rebadged second-generation (J11) Nissan Qashqai, which makes parts and servicing in Europe straightforward.

Can I import a used Rogue Sport to Germany?

Yes. It enters as an individual import with §21 approval, a process we handle routinely and which is simple given the shared European platform.

Does it qualify for 0% EU import duty?

Only with proven US origin via VIN and plant. As it is built outside the US and listed neutral-origin, the rate is confirmed per VIN — never assume duty-free.

Is the 19% import VAT always payable?

Yes. German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer of 19% applies on the customs value regardless of origin.

Is the CVT reliable?

It is durable when serviced and kept cool. A documented fluid-change history is the most important thing to check.

Which trim should I import?

The SL carries the fullest equipment including driver assistance; SV is a sensible mid-range choice.

How long does the import take?

Usually several weeks from purchase to registration, mostly set by shipping and the inspection appointment.

Do you own the cars?

No. USCar Trader is an independent broker; we source and ship on your behalf without holding stock.
